Originally called The Forum when it opened on November 10, 1967, it was renamed in 1973 in honor of prominent New York philanthropist Mitzi E. Newhouse. Notable long-running productions include Six Degrees of Separation (1990), The Substance of Fire (1992), and Streamers (1976–1977).
