About
The British Film Institute (BFI) is the UK's lead organisation for film and the moving image — a registered charity governed by Royal Charter, founded in 1933, and sponsored by the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport. As a National Lottery distributor, the BFI funds film development, production, distribution, and audience development across the UK, awarding approximately £54m in filmmaker and talent development funding for 2023–26, split across its Discovery (debut directors) and Impact (established filmmakers) production strands. Beyond funding, the BFI operates the BFI National Archive (the world's largest film and television archive), the BFI Southbank cinema and BFI IMAX on London's South Bank, the BFI Player streaming service, BFI NETWORK (UK-wide talent development), and publishes the iconic Sight & Sound magazine. Its funded films regularly screen at and win major international festivals including Cannes, Berlinale, and BAFTA.
