IATSE and Studios Set to Resume Negotiations for New Hollywood Basic and Area Standards Agreements

IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) and major Hollywood studios are set to reconvene negotiations for a new three-year contract concerning the Hollywood Basic Agreement and the Area Standards Agreement. Scheduled talks will commence on June 24 and conclude on June 27, as announced by the union led by Matt Loeb.

The impending negotiations follow weeks of on-and-off discussions that were recently paused. Significant differences over wage increases and benefits persist, posing challenges to reaching an agreement. However, union leadership has remained optimistic, highlighting productive progress in several areas. In a note to members dated June 6, IATSE leaders acknowledged missing the initial June 5 deadline to finalize an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Despite this, the union emphasized that negotiations have been largely productive, with consensus reached on numerous issues. Union president Matt Loeb, typically reserved, expressed cautious optimism regarding the upcoming talks. “We look forward to concluding our bargaining with the AMPTP and reaching an agreement that our members will be proud to ratify,” Loeb stated in his message to union members. The Hollywood Basic Agreement covers approximately 50,000 members of the 13 West Coast Locals, primarily based in Los Angeles. In contrast, the Area Standards Agreement encompasses 23 Locals nationwide, representing an additional 20,000 members. These agreements are crucial in defining employment terms and conditions for a broad spectrum of industry workers. With the current contracts set to expire on July 31, IATSE has firmly stated it does not intend to extend the existing deals beyond this deadline, underscoring the urgency of reaching a new agreement. As IATSE prepares to return to the negotiating table, other industry unions are also engaged in their contract discussions. Today, the Teamsters and various other crafts began their negotiations. This collective effort across different unions highlights a broader industry push for improved wages, benefits, and working conditions. The upcoming negotiations between IATSE and the studios are poised to be closely monitored by industry stakeholders, given the significant impact these agreements have on Hollywood's labor landscape.
